The quiet peace of the early morning was broken by the sound of feet coming steadily down the street. Nearer and nearer they came, with purpose in every step. The dawn was still grey in the eastern sky, the mist hung low over the river, when two young boys came round the corner- going fishing. Their faces were shrouded under the peak of their waterproof hats. Scarves hung down in the front of their duffle coats, and each carried their precious rods, sheathed in green waterproof bags. One of them bore up manfully under the weight of the fishing bags. Already they wore the dedicated look found on all manner of men who find their pleasure and relaxation in the gentle art of angling.
For years men have fished in the rivers and streams flowing through Middleton, and in 1845 the “Borough of Middleton Angling Society” was begun by a group of men living in Parkfield. Little did they know that the society would still be active 164 years later.
The above passage was taken from
“The History of Middleton Angling Society founded 1845 by Margaret Smith compiled from the minute books."
